Using the Mothers Powerball Car Wax Tool and Mothers Billet Metal Polish, I tackled the arduous task of restoring the cast aluminum rims on my Honda VTX. Years of road grime and oxidation had left them looking dull and lackluster. Previous attempts with other products resulted in streaking and dissatisfaction. The Mothers Mini Powerball easily attached to my drill with a 10mm wrench. The small size of the Mini Powerball proved invaluable, allowing me to reach intricate areas of the rims that were previously inaccessible by hand. While the Powerball did have a tendency to jump around a bit, requiring a firm grip on the extension, its cleaning power was undeniable.
The Mothers Billet Metal Polish, although designed for billet metal, worked exceptionally well on the aluminum rims (as recommended by fellow VTX owners on online forums). The polish quickly cut through the oxidation and grime, revealing the shine beneath. Buffing off the residue was effortless, leaving a brilliant finish.
Encountering a Snag with the Mini Powerball
The front rim restoration went smoothly. The Mini Powerball performed flawlessly, leaving both sides of the rim gleaming. However, during the back rim cleaning, the Powerball became clogged with polish. Attempting to unscrew the Powerball from the extension proved impossible, despite numerous attempts. Frustratingly, as I continued working, pieces of the Powerball began to break off.
Despite this setback, I persevered, completing the second rim. While the final result was good, I knew it could be even better with a fresh Powerball.
Final Thoughts on the Mothers Powerball Car Wax Tool
The Mothers Mini Powerball and Billet Metal Polish significantly simplified the rim cleaning process compared to hand polishing. The Powerball’s ability to reach tight spots is a major advantage. However, the inability to easily detach and clean or flip the Powerball was a significant drawback.
Despite the durability issue, the Mothers Powerball car wax tool delivered impressive results. I plan to purchase a replacement and will try again, hopefully with better luck disassembling the tool for cleaning. The combination of the Mothers Powerball and Billet Metal Polish offers a powerful solution for restoring shine to dull and oxidized aluminum rims.
