Born on December 22, 1944, in Lorain, OH, to Walter and Pauline (Durjava) Bedell, Doug’s early life laid the foundation for a life of varied accomplishments. He was predeceased by his sisters, Evelyn and Sheryl Bedell. His legacy continues through his wife of 23 years, Joyce (Slaybaugh, Barker), his son Steven (Angela) Bedell, granddaughters Kasie Lea and Lillian Mae, stepson Ryan (Hope) Barker, and grandchildren David, Abigail, Nathan, and Caleb. Family was a cornerstone of Doug’s life, and he cherished the time spent with his loved ones, particularly in his later years, imparting his wisdom and passions to his grandchildren.
After graduating from Bishop Hartley High School in 1962, Doug embarked on a multifaceted career path that showcased his versatility and work ethic. He began by honing his skills in drafting and illustration for the City of Columbus, demonstrating an early aptitude for precision and detail. This precision was further developed during his apprenticeship in tool and die with Western Electric, providing him with a solid foundation in craftsmanship and technical expertise, skills highly valued in industries ranging from automotive to specialized racing components, perhaps even resonating with the meticulous engineering of a “douglas tool and die sprint car 51.” His professional journey then led him to sales at Litton Industries, where he marketed office equipment, before he transitioned into the family business, Star Heating and Cooling. Ultimately, Doug’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own company, Bedell Heating and Cooling. For over five decades, he served central Ohio in the HVAC industry, building a reputation for quality service and reliability, providing “Air, as you like it!” to countless homes and businesses. His long tenure in this field speaks volumes about his dedication and expertise in a demanding industry.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Doug was a proud patriot who served in the Marine Corps for six years, encompassing both active duty and reserve commitments. His dedication to his country was evident in his long-standing display of the American flag at his home, a constant reminder of his deep-seated patriotism.
Doug’s commitment to service extended beyond his military duty and professional life into his community. He invested significantly in the lives of others through coaching in the Little Buckeyes Football League for nine seasons, shaping young athletes and instilling values of teamwork and sportsmanship. His leadership also shone through his coordination of the East Side Dart League, which achieved remarkable success, winning the state championship for five years under his guidance. Furthermore, Doug was a mentor in his HVAC business, generously sharing his knowledge and experience with his employees, fostering the next generation of skilled tradespeople. This passion for mentorship continued into his later years as he spent invaluable time with his grandchildren, passing on life lessons and sharing his passions.
In his spiritual journey, Doug found faith in Christ later in life and became an active member of the World Harvest Church community. He graduated from World Harvest Bible College as part of their inaugural class in 1992, marking a significant milestone in his spiritual development. A transformative trip to Israel deepened his faith and love for the nation, culminating in his baptism in the Jordan River. Later, he became a devoted member of Marion Christian Center, actively participating in the worship arts ministry as part of the flag team. In recent years, Doug and his wife hosted a life group in their home through Northgate Church in Sunbury, Ohio, further demonstrating his commitment to his faith and community.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on November 2, 2024, at Northgate Church, 51 Fourwinds Court, Sunbury, OH 43074. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. The family welcomes guests for refreshments at Northgate Church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 5600 E.
